Safari: Things to Know

I wrote up this quick guide for a friend who needed to switch away from Google Chrome (for some strange reason), so I thought I’d post it here for the world!

Installing Safari

  1. http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
  2. Choose “Safari 5.0.2 for Windows XP, Vista or 7″ (not Safari 5.0.2+QuickTime for Windows XP, Vista or 7)
  3. Uncheck “Keep me up to date with Apple news, software updates, and the latest information on products and services.”
  4. Do not give them your email address, unless you really, really want to…?
  5. Click “Download Now”
  6. Open SafariSetup.exe after it finishes downloading. (Click “Run” if it prompts you.)
    1. Accept the terms.
    2. Uncheck “Install Bonjour for Windows”.
    3. Click “Install”.
    4. Click “Finish”.
    5. Uncheck “Always perform this check.” and click “No”.

For Your Information

  • Safari opens very slowly each first time you open it (after each computer restart).
  • Safari doesn’t do well with multiple tabs open at the same time.
  • Safari has the 2nd slowest (after Firefox) JavaScript environment.
  • Safari uses a moderately heavy amount of memory with a single tab open.  (Which can cause system slowness.)

Why don’t you be the first? Come on, you know you want to!
