GVXMPP was fun, but short lived!
Six days was all this little SMS-to-Google-Voice-to-chat-client-hack lasted. It’s not their fault though. Apparently either their users or Google itself had some Terms of Service concerns that caused them to cease operations. I would just like to take this moment to thank the GVXMPP team for the work that they did. It was fun while it lasted guys!
For those who might wonder what GVXMPP was, I’d like to look back and remember it for you all.
GVXMPP was a way to interact with people who would send you a text message to your Google Voice number. Instead of having to reply on your phone, you could use your XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, which used to be called Jabber) enabled chat client to reply. The SMS would show up as an IM and you could use your computer’s keyboard to reply instead of your phone’s keyboard.
If you didn’t experience it, you’d have to imagine the convenience this service offered for free! Sure, Google Voice will email you your text messages, but this took it one step further as you could SMS over IM.
